Wednesday the 5th of December 2012 will surely be remembered by art lovers for quite some time. Not often was there such excitement in salerooms as in the Sotheby´s sale where one of the finest drawings by Raphael was to be sold. The former ‘Chatsworth drawing’, the head of a young apostle, is of exceptional quality and speaks for itself. Raphael made the study of the apostle’s head for his Transfiguration, his last great commission. In a crescendo-like bidding session the drawing raised bids eventually leading up to the final sum of 29 million pounds. The Old Masters keep surprising us, and apart from being solid and safe, even now astronomical records are being set.
