In Oxford, just an hour by train from London, the Ashmolean Museum offers a rare opportunity to see an exceptional selection of highly important drawings. Works from the greatest masters in western art can now be seen up close. For example Italy’s big three Cinquecento masters: Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raphael. This immediately renders an impression of the quality that is on display in Oxford this summer.
But the exhibition has even more to offer. It covers five centuries art with names like the ones of Guercino, Tiepolo, Watteau, Ingres, Degas, David Hockney and Antony Gormly. This impressive selection of master drawings made The Times so lyrical that it was rewarded with a five star appreciation, ‘ To feel this close to the hand of the greatest artists in western art is miraculous’, they commented. This is what master drawings are all about. And indeed, seeing them in real is a totally different experience.
Master Drawings in the Ashmolean is on until 18 August this year.
