17th and 18th century drawings
The november sale at Jan Six Fine Art showed an impressive line up of fine art drawings by well known Dutch and Flemish painters. Among them: a smoking peasant by Adriaen van Ostade, a depiction of Minerva by Willem van Mieris, a mythological scene by Jacob Jordaens and also a colourful study of a turkey by Gerardus van Veen.
Among the landscapes there was a very appealing drawing by Allart van Everdingen with a scene of a bridge over a canal. The charming figure in the front, busily drawing, makes us wonder if Van Everdingen made a small reference to himself working on a quick impression. Just above this small wonder Six Fine Art came up with a very delicate drawing by the famous Abraham Bloemaert. This impression of an old barn with a figure just at the side has this typical Bloemaert atmosphere one would really be looking for.
The vividly sketched interior scene by the well known David Teniers the Younger was another highlight. The easy and swift rendering illustrates the dexterity of its inventor. All in all for those who love and collect drawings there was much to see. The exhibition showed more than fifty sheets, making it an attractive overview of drawing in the Low Countries. Fine art drawings keep surprising us, and for every purse there is always something to discover.
